Question-1  There are mountain in life when we have to make hard choices between our roles as private individuals and citizen with a sense of national loyalty . discuss with reference to the story you have just read .  

Answer-  the story ‘The Enemy’ is about the dilemma faced by a Japanese doctor . en enemy  soldier washed up by the sea and comes at his doorstep . he is an American prisoner of war as is identified by the cap he is wearing . now, being a loyal Japanese , Dr. Sadao should hand over the man to the police . but the man is badly wounded . this appeals to the doctor ‘s sense  of obligation towards his profession . now he has to make a choice whether he should fulfil his duty as a doctor or as a patriot. He recalls the principle of his profession that he must save a life if he can. He behaves accordingly . he takes the man inside his house and operates upon him  he takes good care of the man by way of regular medical checkups , ministration and food . here a chose being a doctor first , and save the life of an enemy soldier . Inspite  of fact that it can put him into trouble , he saves his enemy’s life an also manage to sent the man out of Japan . in this way he succeeded in betraying neither .

    Question 2- Dr. Sadao was compelled by his duty as a doctor to help the enemy soldier. What made Hana, his wife sympathetic to him in the face of open defence from the domestic staff ?

Answer- Hana was a woman good at heart . she was a loving and supporting wife too. The domestic servants were totally opposed to the idea of helping an enemy soldier . Hana did not think so . her husband had decided to save his life . now she took it as her duty to take care of him . it was her humanity that made her sympathetic to him . his pitiable condition moved her heart and she warmly looked after him . she washed him herself . she even fed him with her own hands . thus her goodness and kindness made her behave sympathetically even with her enemy . besides , she had been also a student of medicine and hence knew the pledge of humanity a doctor has swear in the profession . she did it because she was a human being in true sense . even when her servant , yumi refused to wash the man , Hana herself washed him .

Question-3 How would you explain the  reluctance of the soldier to leave the shelter of the doctor’s home even when he knew he could not stay there without risk to the doctor and himself ?

Answer- the soldier was an escaped prisoner of war. He had by chance Dr. Sadao’s doorstep Dr sadao had taken pity on him . he had kept him hidden in his house . he had operated upon his wound and saved his life . this made the soldier have great confidence in Dr. Sadao  and his wife . he knew that their house . was a safe place for him . no harm could touched him in their house . the soldier has realised that Dr. Sadao and hi8s wife , Hana, were true and merciful human being and their house was a safe heaven for him . besides he did not know where to because he was en enemy country . if he went out of Dr. Sadao’s house, there was a danger of his being caught . therefore he was reluctant  to leaves the doctors ‘ home . both Dr. Sadao and his wife took care of the man so nicely that the became confident of his safety at Dr. Sadao’s place . once he was out of the house, he would be in constant peril .

Question 4- What explain the attitude of the general in the, matter of the enemy soldier ? was it human consideration , lack of national loyalty , dereliction of duty or simply self absorption ?

Answer-  The general was ruthless . if Sadao were not indispensable to him , both the prisoner and the doctor would have been in trouble . but the general wished that Sadao should not  be arrested so he suggested to have that the prisoner killed by his assassins quietly . then the general was suffering from his painful ailment and he was burdened with more responsibilities . he could hardly think of anything beyond him official work . it was not human consideration foe the prisoner that he did not send the assassins to kill him . it was not even dereliction of duty or lack of patriotism . he just forget to send the assassins he was so much absorbed in his own affairs .

Question -5 While hatred against a member of the enemy race is justifiable , especially during war time , what make a human being rise above narrow prejudice ?

Answer- During war , hatred against enemy runs high . even the government arouse their people’s sentiment . . but whereas people hate a race , they seldom hate the individuals . when you see an enemy in trouble ,you reach out to him . it is because of our fellow feeling . only a ruthless person can ignore a wounded man crying for water, even if he belonged to enemy country   even soldier of warring countries are known to have helped each other . in fact individuals  have nothing against each other. Human values remain superb.

  Questions-6- Do you think the Doctor’s final solution to the problem was the best possible one in the circumstances?

Answer- the doctor wanted to enemy soldier’s life . he could no longer hide him in his house without risking his own life and the life of the prisoner . he had not the heart to hand him to the police . had the general sent his men, the prisoner would have been quietly killed. The doctor thought of the best solution . he was able to get rid of the soldier and also to save his own life . we can safely presume that the soldier got a Korean fishing boat and regained his freedom.

Questions 7-Does the story remind you of ‘birth ‘by A.J Cronin that you read in snapshots last years ? what are the similarities ?

Answer- the two stories tell about a doctor’s skill and dedication . In “Birth” Andrews was tired and he was called upon to help a child to be born . the family was very eager to have a child . the doctor had to wait till the right time . when he was asked to do his work, he found twice the trouble than he had expected . first he saved the mother . then he turn to the baby . which has been discarded by the nurse as stillborn . but the doctor stubbornly laboured for half an hour and was able to make the child breath . he saved two lives .

In “ The Enemy” , Dr sadao saves an enemy the solider was shot in the back . he had been bleeding . at first he stopped the bleeding . then he operated upon the patient . with great skill he removed the bullet . it was a difficult operation because the kidney was involved . a little mistake could have killed the patient .

Question 8- is there any film you have seen or novel you have read with similar theme ?

Answer- The story of the Vietnamese film the white man is quite similar to story . Vietnam war at was with America . Dr Ho Chi and his wife min chi find a U.S . navy soldier washed ashore by the sea . the soldier arrives at the their doorstep . he is badly wounded . the doctor and his wife of faced by a dilemma . they have to decide whether to save his life or hand him over to police . first they think of throwing the man back into the sea . but being a doctor , ho chi operates upon him and life . then he can not push him to death by handing him over to polish . he arrange a boat for him and helps him escape to freedom . the same way in the story The enemy Dr. Sadao save the life of enemy and then helps him escapes to freedom . thus both the tales are similar in there plot, content  and message..

Answer- Dr. Sadaoi was a famous Japanese surgeon and scientist . he completed his study of medicine in America . he lived in a house which was  built on the Japanese coast . the house was surrounded by pine tree.

Question 2-Why was sadao sent to America and why was kept in Japan?

Answer – Sadao was a skilled doctor and scientist. The general realized that only Dr. Sadao could save his life. That is why the general did not trust anyone except always.

Question 3- who was Hana ? How did She Meet Sadao?

Andwer- Hana was Dr. Sadao's wife. Hana was found at an American officer's house.

Questions 4- What did Hana  And Dr. Sadao see out of the mist ? What did they think. ?

Answer- Both saw that some black thing came out of the smoke, it was the man. He was flung up out of the ocean . It was as if a great tide had thrown him away. He staggered  a few steps and fell. Both thought maybe it was a fisherman.

Questions 5- who was the wounded person ? what was happened ro him ?

Answer - The wounded man was an American soldier with a smear of blood soaked in the sand on one side. In the lower part of the back on the right side, they saw that the gun's grass had opened again.

Answer- He took the injured man to his home for treatment. He was badly wounded. his gunshot wound had reopened

Question 7- who was yumi and what did she say ?

Answer- Yumi was the babysitter when Hana asked to wash the wounded soldier's wound, she refused to do so.

Question 8- Who washed the American soldier and why ?

Answer- The American soldiers were washed and cleaned by Hana. Because Yumi refused to wash American soldiers .

Answer- Doctor Sadon gave the soldiers a drug of sedation and he felt it with the help of some hard object which was a bullet. And then the doctor always took out this pill .

Question -10 How did the Youngman wake up ? what did he first ?

Answer-   The young man is very weak and his blue eyes looked with terror when he realized what he had said. She tells Thana how she knows English.

Questions 11- what did the servant say and how did they react ?

Answer- The servants said that this is treason, they used to see the American as their enemy. Because he was in Japan and America. And they decided to leave the house   .

Question 12- Why did the messenger come to Dr .Sadao Because house and who sent him ?

Answer- The suspect came to Dr. Sadon's house because the general had called Dr. Sadon. the general was in pain again.

Question13- who was the general ? why did he call Dr. Sadao?

Answer- The general was an old cruel and selfish general of Japan. The general was in pain again, so called Dr. Sadao.

Question -14 What did the general promised with Dr. Sadao ? what had happened then ?

Answer- The general promised Dr Sadao that he would not let him get into trouble. He will send the assassins to your house and they will kill the American soldiers, apart from this they will also remove the body. But the assassins never came. And Sadao himself makes arrangements to get rid of the problems.

Questions 15- what had happened on the third night after the planning of killing the American soldier  ?

Answer- On the third night, the strong wind turned into rain and the garden was filled with the sound of dripping eaves and flowing streams. Sadao slept better, but he awoke to the sound of a crash and tried to go to the American soldier's room but was stopped by Hana.

Questions 16- what did Dr. sadao think to get rid of that soldier of an enemy  ?

Answer- Dr. Sadao painstakingly saved the man. He didn't want him to be handed over to the police and killed. That's why he decided to put the man in the boat and he loaded his boat with enough resources .

Answer- The American soldier thought that Dr. Sadao was a Japanese, despite the war with Japan, Sadao saved the life of an American soldier. He put humanity above the national. If everyone thinks so, then there will be no war.

Question 18 – why did the general have a trust and closeness in Dr. Sadao .?

Answer- Being ill, the general had trust and closeness in Dr. Sadao. He could have needed an operation at any time.

Question 19- Why did Dr. sadao save the life of the war prisoner , an American being a Japanese doctor?

Answer- He was trained to save every life that could be saved. He was true and honest to his profession. so saved that soldier's life.

Answer-Dr. Sadao stood in his verandah and thought about that white face. whom he knew .

Answer- Dr. Sadao was a very honest, dedicated person and full of qualities of humanity. Sadao was able to save the integrity of his profession. Dr. Sadao was a very true patriot that's why he wrote a letter to an authority and kept it in his record. He also told the general about the American soldier.
